Collinsville is approximately 12 miles from St. Louis, Missouri and is considered part of that city's Metro-East area. Famously, it is the home of the world's largest ketchup bottle, a former water tower, and is the world's horseradish capital.

The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is located within the city limits of Collinsville.

cahokia

The largest Pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico, this was one of the first eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites designated within the United States.

At its peak about 1200, it had a population of 20,000-30,000, more than any city in the present-day United States until after 1800. It includes Monks Mound, the largest prehistoric earthwork in the Americas, and more than 70 surviving smaller mounds. Monks Mound is larger at its base than the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The complex also includes a reconstructed Woodhenge, used for complex astronomical sightings.

miners theatre

The Miner's Institute Building was built in 1918 by the local coal mining unions, as a labor temple. Each miner donated 1% of his salary for one year to the construction of the building. Total construction costs were about $90,000, in comparison a three bedroom home at the
time was $3000-$4000. The building was utilized by the unions as a "home away from home".  Meetings, entertainment, dances, relaxation and a place to bring their families. In fact, the Miner's shut down one other theatre and an opera house in town, because other unions would only support the Miner's.
Built in the "vaudeville" style, the auditorium hosted several traveling troupes.
From the late 60's the building was operated as a 2nd run movie theatre until it closed it's doors in 1984.
