Population 19.000

Before the railroad arrived in Newton on July 17, 1871 the area was only sparsely populated by a few homesteaders. A number of businesses were soon established and Newton became the shipping point of the immense herds of Texas cattle which prior to this time had been driven to Abilene.

In 1872 the western terminal for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and the railhead for the Chisholm Trail, a cattle trail that ended in Abilene, were established here.

With the arrival the large herds of cattle, also came cowboys, gambers, "soiled doves," and roughs of every variety. To accommodate these rowdy men and women, a portion of the fledgling city known as "Hyde Park" developed which held no less than fifteen buildings devoted to "social amusement". In total, the town boasted 27 saloons and eight gambling halls. During these days, Newton came to be known as "bloody and lawless" and was called the "wickedest city in the west." This reputation came primarily from the August, 1871 Gunfight at Hyde Park, which ultimately resulted in eight men being killed before, during and after the event.

Wholesale Murder At Newton. Five Men Killed And Six Wounded. The Jury Ordered To Leave. The "Leading Man" Not Arrested.

On Sunday morning last [August 20] a row occurred at Newton which resulted in the murder of two men and the wounding of nine others, three of whom have since died from wounds received in the affray. This affair occurred in one of the sinks of iniquity near the town called a "dance house." A former resident of this town who was at Newton gives us the following particulars of the affair:

It seems that this murderous affair was the result of several less fatal shooting scrapes which have been happening at Newton for some weeks.

It must be borne in mind that the state of society in that town is now at its worst. The town is largely inhabited by prostitutes, gamblers and whisky-sellers. Pistol shooting is the common amusement. All the frequenters of the saloons, gambling dens and houses of ill-fame are armed at all times, mostly with two pistols.

Shortly after incorporation of the City in 1872, the Newton city council passed an ordinance prohibiting the running at large of buffalo and other wild animals.

The city continued to be a railroad town for more than a century, along with developing into an agricultural and industrial center.
