Earlier travelers were bouncing along the Overland Stage route toward the stage station which was the beginning of this southwestern Wyoming town in 1862. Now Rock Springs is on the Union Pacific's transcontinental line.

Established in 1888 as a mining town, the natural resources around the area are the driving force behind the Rock Springs economy. For years, the area provided millions of tons of coal to feed the nation's locomotives. And still the Rock Springs area continues to have a leadership role in the nation's energy production.

Rock Springs is known as the home of 56 nationalities; a true melting pot. Formed by the railroad and coal mines. One of the worst race riots in American history, known as the Rock Springs Massacre, occurred against chinese miners working near Rock Springs on September 2, 1885.
